Review: Crowded House
I went to see Crowded House last night at the NEC. (And there's something I never thought I'd say after they split up ten years ago) but like a lot of bands who called it a day in the nineties they're back and it's like they've never been away.
They should have played Symphony Hall or the ICC. Don't get me wrong, I love the NEC, but the stage is *much* too low and if you're seated on the main floor (the bit that is usually the standing area) you can't see a single thing and after spending £37.50 on my ticket I was not pleased to discover that my main view of the evening would be the massive moon-heads ahead of me and a tiny corner of the video screen. Seeing Crowded House themselves. Pfft, I should be so lucky.
Missed the support act due to a frantic dash down the M6 (yeah, yeah always late, rubbish weather and nearly getting run off the road by a twattish lorry driver), so I don't know what they were like, sorry. I'm sure they were good though.
The 'House came on about 8.20 and were playing until just after 11. So if I could have seen them I would have certainly got my moneys worth.
The set was ace, it was all elements from the album cover with a little caravan on one side that had a little table lamp in the window, plus gauzey curtains, little towers that went up and down and some spinny light effects. And for bonus points a glitterball.
Because everyone was sat down (and the stewards were very strict about you staying in your seats) the crowd was very restrained, not even joining in the songs until Four Seasons in One Day. (Apparently we sounded a bit like monks.) In fact the crowd were so quiet you could make out individual people singing along - which is never a good thing.
The curse of bands visiting the Midlands and getting sick continues apace - this time Nick had been enjoying the NEC's 'catering' and was feeling a bit worse for wear.
Random observations:
[x] Jerry Springer was there watching it. JERRY SPRINGER!!! He walked past us three times and it was defintely him. Jerry SPRINGER!!! ZOMG! What's he doing in Birmingham? (unless he's come to take tips on how to be a dick from off Jezza)
[x] Nick playing with a little camera on stage
[x] Better be Home Soon lit by a sea of gently waving mobile phone lights. I did a video of this on my phone. I need to figure out how to pull it off to show you all.
[x] Neil yelling "Up the Villa!" to a crowd of boos. :)
[x] Matt didn't stop grinning ALL night. I swear he's the happiest drummer I've ever seen. He was enjoying himself so much.
[x] Neil's grown himself a bit of a hairhat. Like a Lego toy. Bless.
Stand out songs for me:
Four Seasons in One day
Pineapple Head
Weather With You
(I'm a very old-skool CH fan I think)
There Goes God
Mean to me
Dont stop now
Four Seasons
Heaven that Im making
Pineapple Head
Say That Again
Pour le monde
Whispers And Moans
Rocky Raccoon
Silent House
Dont Dream its over
She Walked Her Way Down
Its only natural
Distant Sun
Something So Strong
Locked Out
Weather with you
Fingers of Love
Into Temptation
Fall at your feet
Italian Plastic
Better Be Home Soon
