There's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow...
...well there wasn't, but 'Romulans' doesn't fit.
I went to see Star Trek on Thursday night. (Yes I think I am amongst the last people in the world to go and see it.)
Our Trailers du jour were:
The Hangover (Mike Tyson singing Phil Collins is probably the most surreal thing I've ever seen)
Transformers (EXPLOSIONS!ROBOTS!MORE EXPLOSIONS!THE AUDIENCE LOOKING UP MEGAN FOX'S SHORTS!)
Terminator (More ROBOTS!F*CKING CHRISTIAN BALE!TIME TRAVEL!)
I am not a fan of the new style Orange adverts though. I miss the film pitches. But tangentially related: how much is Emilio Estevez looking like his dad?
[x] Nokia manages to keep a market share (and that annoying ringtone) even into the 24th Century. That's impressive.
[x] I was saddened at the lack of massively intricate sixties hairstyles on the ladies. When I was a tiny and my parents watched the original series I really wanted hair like the female crew members when I grew up.
[x] The space battles were very impressive, albeit a little bit noisy in places. (There was a chap behind me muttering “you wouldn't hear photon torpedoes explode in space”. He has a point.)
[x] I also really liked the ship designs. And the Enterprise bridge set, it was lovely and bright but not cheap looking.
[x] OMGTHEYKILLEDVULCAN!!!! Didn't see that coming.
[x] On the subject of explodey planets, do you think Spock can get to Romulus in time this time, otherwise this is going to start all over again.
[x] On the subject of which, why create so much red matter if you only need the tiniest amount to create a supernova? (other than to resolve the plot later on)
[x] Sulu's sword fight was brilliant and I loved his little segment-y sword. The future is brilliant!
[x] I think I've spent way too much time watching Heroes as I spent a lot of the time half-expectingSylarSpock to whip open some heads to try and understand why humans are so illogical. I was also disconcerted by his lack of eyebrows. And spent of lot of his close up time trying to figure out if they'd been waxes to oblivion or were just hidden by make-up. (My priorities, let me show you them.)
[x] Chris Pine really captured some of the Shat's mannerisms. But. Without the. Shat's. Delivery. Especially when he was sat in the captain's chair on the bridge.
[x] Karl Urban was awesome! And I'm a bit sad that not that many people have commented on just how awesome he is. *sadface* Especially when he was arguing with Spock (as much as someone can argue with a Vulcan).
[x] Simon Pegg though, well, lots of people noticed how awesome he was, although his accent was a tiny bit off, and when he was asking for a towel the accent disappeared altogether (much to my amusement). Oh, and does it count that Scotty invented the equation to transport people between moving objects if Spock shows him how to do it?
[x] I'm sad I didn't recognise Greg Grunberg's voice until I saw the credits. Woes.
[x] Give Uhura more to do next time please, and Scotty and Bones and Sulu and Chekov. In fact, have Kirk and Spock off doing something else for 2/3 of the film and lets concentrate on the others.
[x] They managed to tick off a lot of the key moments that people (rightly and wrongly) remember about Star Trek, like Kirk getting it on with a gorgeous green-skinned lady and a redshirt copping it.
[x] Proving that I really should pay more attention – the reference to Archer's Beagle went completely over my head. Woes.
[x] I was impressed by the attention to details, like Uhura's earpiece and all the computer beeps and the computer voice. It took me back to 6pm, BBC2 on a weekday evening, it really did.
Trying to explain how the parallel universe worked in conjunction with the 'original' timeline (the one with KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN!, rubbish stunt doubles and DS9) and how just because there's been a split, doesn't mean that all that was being overwritten to His Lordship proved a bit difficult. Anyone know if anyone has meta'd about this yet (and done it well) so I can link him to it?
All in all I rather liked it and will give it a solid 8/10 (which may rise once I get to see it again.)

Karl was completely brilliant as was the lad playing Checkov. He was utterly adorable.

Karl Urban = ♥ I hope he gets more good movie roles as an outcome of this.

Yeah, that instance of not-so-subtle product placement annoyed the hell out of me.

However, I absolutely ADORED this movie, and yes, Karl Urban was AWESOME. Hooray!
I heard that Zachary Quinto had actually shaved his eyebrows for the part of Spock, but I have never verified that with another source...
