If the Kids are still hooked to the show, then the rest will follow i.e. the family audience. Adult fandom is not the be all and end all of Doctor Who. Though i am filled with much mirth at OG's forum. The same reaction is occuring as Tate got "Oh noes it's the end of Doctor Who.... Bloody RTD".
I'm hoping that we will see a strong and confident Rose Tyler, who does not need to pine for the Doctor (but like Sarah Jane has a special place in her heart for the Doctor). That will be a stroke of genius if RTD can pull it off.
I think given time, people will calm down. At the moment it's gut reactions and vows of never watching the show again (it happened when Eccleston's departure was made public). RTD ruined the character of Rose in series 2, he's at fault, so i have a feeling he might want to ressurrect Rose from the abyss of bad character writing.
