*has emo face on*

Oh Life on Mars how I will miss you.

[x] Driving through the washing lines, that's a great way to disguise the fact you're driving up and down the same alleys in Bolton/Farnsworth. I always play spot the Sky dish during these scenes.

[x] Bring Gene Down. Poor Gene. He doesn't deserve it, and as Sam points out he gets results – which is a real change in tune to when he fist turned up in A Division. And it just goes to show how being in 1973 has changed Sam. And probably changed for the better.

[x] The Train Set. I love the high-techness of it all. (And I bet Chris used to play with it when there was no one about)

[x]The Graveyard scene was absolutely chilling. Sam was doubting himself, we were doubting him and ourselves and Frank Morgan swanned through it all looking smug. Who really is Sam Tyler. For a while I really was believing Frank. Damn you and your manipulations!

[x] Sam telling Annie the truth was heartbreaking. The look of betrayal in her eyes was painful – especially as she's been the one who's believed in him all along. After all, if you can't trust the person you look up to who can you trust?

[x] The train heist was ace. Although really, shotgun shells should have torn that carriage to ribbons. Damn Morgan for spoiling everything with his hissy feedback. Bloody typical. Gene managed to make a balaclava and donkey jacket look good.

[x]Look at how everything falls into place once Sam wakes up:
Frank is the surgeon
The ward he was staying on was called Hyde and the room was 2612
There was more but it's escaped me right now. (I'll craftily come back and edit this bit later and latecomers to the review will never know.)

[x] The colour scheme of the 'real' world - blues and greys – really contrasted with the warm colours of 1973.
[x] Sam looked so out of place back in the real world and I think he'd realised this even before he spoke to his mum about the promise that he'd made.
[x] I do feel sorry for Sam's poor mum though. He son nearly died, came back and then killed himself. How awful must that be? Poor Mrs Tyler.

[x] When he was standing on top of the tower block, looking across the Manchester landscape I knew what he was going to do. After all, it was very reminiscent of a scene from the first series. Only this time Annie's not there to save him.

[x] It was about now that I started bawling.

Then it all went dark. But hang on there is still 7 or 8 minutes to go!

[x] There was literally a light at the end of the tunnel for Sam. Which of course then opens discussion into whether the Afterlife is actually a manifestation of 1973 Manchester (which would be rather cool). And Sam was a hero too with a pair of very impressive shots. Well done him.

[x] Phyllis: "I'm not just a sex Goddess, I've got a pai of eyes in my head" Oh Phyllis – I'm really going to miss you.

[x] It was really nice to see everyone in the Railway Arms afterwards, looking all happy and Chris and Ray finally accepting Sam as one of their own. Bless. I got a bit teary again.

[x] and the rainbow in the background when Anne and Sam finally kissed. Awwwwwwwwwwww!

[x] Loved that Gene managed to ruin the mood so conclusively by appearing in a squeal of tyres. Laughed at Ray's inability to close the passenger door too :D

[x] And off they screeched into the sunset to live happily ever after. Yay!

[x] The last shot of the scary little Test Card girl *wibble*

[x] So, what is going to happen to Sam now? I'm guessing from the radio noise ("He's slipping away") that there's no coming back for Mr Tyler this time. Will he just fade away in 1973 ? Will he get killed in the line of duty? Will he go back to 'Hyde'? Will he live happily ever after with Annie? (I really hope so)

He obviously doesn't stay because he's not involved with Ashes to Ashes how are they going to explain his absence? After all, he'd hardly leave CID after leaping off the top of a building to get back.

I'd wrote that bit before I'd read the press release for Ashes to Ashes so I've changed my mind a bit on that. Probably Sam has got Gene's job and Gene's headed South to sort out the Arsenal supporting scrotes.

But how did he do it? This is going to affect how it all pans out. If it is all in his head, caused by the tumour, if he dies surely that world would disappear too. If it was actually time travel via astral projection then he'll probably be okay if he dies in the present, but there will be definitely no going back for him (which is what he wants now.)

Oh Life on Mars you are so head hurty.

John Simm was on the Entertainment News on Tuesday saying that he wishes that the series had finished on the first of the Return of the King style endings and that the last 4 or five minutes hadn't happened.

So was Philip Glenister who sadly didn't pull of his face to reveal he was a Doctor Who Monster/David Tennant and that made me sad. Woes.

Love these ideas. I'd probably go with this theory unless Ashes to Ashes proves it wrong.

I'm looking forward to AtA but I'm really going to miss the Sam/Gene interaction...it's what made me fall in love with LoM. Maybe we'll be lucky and will get a couple of Sam references in the spin off?

*emo sigh*

What will we do for witty banter, and emo time travelling cops now? :(

I may have to write to the BEEB. You see, I would gladly watch John Simm and Phillip Glenister sit around in a room doing Sod all. We know that they would do something interesting eventually....

Oh, I would've loved it if it had ended on him jumping off the building. But I was okay with the back-in-1973 ending for some bizarre reason, too. Matthew Graham said in an interview that Sam going back was meant to be him dying and those bits were the last few seconds of his consciousness, stretching out, and that when they drove off it really was into oblivion. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh.

You could always choose to believe that the last moments we saw onscreen after the flatline on the radio were the last moments of Sam's life in 2006. It's up to you if his life in 1973 goes on beyond that as an afterlife of sorts. :)

Loved, loved the finale.

You'd think that when Gene ends up in the same situation as LoM, he could hardly help mentioning Sam as another DI with weird ideas who turned up mysteriously... (I think it's Gene, he's magically sucking sidekicks from the 21st century)

I hope they don't say anything that spoils the this-is-DCI-Tyler-and-DI-Cartwright-Tyler-together-they-fight-crime...in Manchester scenario that should be happening off-screen.

The whole episode was a bit confusing to me, still not sure what was going on so here's my theory. I think that Sam was actually from the present and went back to that time mainly because he remembered that it was so important and influential in his family life. I think that once he came back to the real world he realized he didn't belong there so he "died" and went back to 1973. And finally Sam and Annie kissed!! I'm still sad that it ended so soon as I was looking forward to more.

I had heard nothing about 'Ashes to Ashes' until you mentioned it. I'm glad that at least some of the characters will live on, but it still makes me wonder about Sam and Annie. I hope that they ended up happily ever after :)
