Have you seen the Doctor Who frontpage for this episode? Oh it made me laugh. I want an animated one as my background. Then you too can act out "DOOOOOOOOOCCCCCCCCCCCCTTTTTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!" in the comfort of my own computer. :D

A Time Lord's Guide to Rifts

Yeah, that big old earthquake, all the Doctor's fault.

Wait, hang on a moment

He was in the Hub…all the papers were flying around with the Vworp Vworp's . . . now he's running across Roald Dahl Plass . . . oh the lack of continuity, it burns! Although I understand why they can't make reference to Torchwood all the sexxors would scar the little children for life. But even the little kiddies are aware of it, surely?

Oh, and those of you with sharp eyes, take a look over to the Red Dragon Centre. Notice something missing? Yes, this time they remembered to take the Doctor Who Exhibition sign down :D

Poor old Jack, very nearly getting stood up again. Nice grabbing leap though. I presume the handy little forcefield/bubble thing around the TARDIS kept Jack alive on his jolly through the Time Vortex, else he will have run through lots and lots of his lives. But more on his lives later. I have an embryonic theory on the subject of Jack's lives.

It's the cast of Channel Five's The Tribe

So instead of the year one hundred Trillion they've actually landed on late nineties Australia. Well, he was close. :p

Yay John!

I may have been a bit excited to see that. (Not as excited as he reportedly was though) Makes him officially a companion and everything, Hoorah!

Derek Jacobi= made of win

This is trufax. And also so excited to be on the show, bless him. Everyone was a bit starstruck all round. And he was so good. Oh why, oh why is he not on the telly more? This should be rectified immediately. (Someone make up some gift bags with glitter and headshots immediately)

Chan, Chantho, tho

Her make-up is absolutely brill. I love the fact it all moves, it does make it look more realistic (and looks so much better than Hybrid Sec's tentacles).
Another last of a race. Along with the Doctor, Boe and Dalek Caan. All very important personages. As the last of a race often are.

I like Martha's coat
That is all.

"We should go, we should really, really go"

But of course you won't. The smile shows that. I wonder if regeneration eleven will be a cat, he's certainly as curious as the proverbial moggy.

Oh Jack. The scrapes you get yourself into. But you do look very pretty when you're dead in your big coat. The Doctor's "I'm sorry" tells me that he is very aware of what happened to Jack and doing it whilst he's 'asleep' is just the cheaters way out. Bad Doctor, you're such a wimp. I love the fact Martha's very hands-on with the life saving.

We know who the real slutboi tease is on the TARDIS, and it's not the Doctor

Jack doesn't let anything as trifling as death get in the way of a good flirt. The Doctor's probably just jealous that Jack's not flirting with him (yet). Love the fact that Martha's a tiny bit starstruck by him. (Probably dazzled a bit by his teeth). What a guy.

Iz it hug tiem nao?

You know, ever since Jack was abandoned on the Game Station I wanted their reunion to be marked by punches thrown so I am a bit sad that it never came to pass. But I can understand why though – after all it's not the done thing to have your companion (He's in the credits, he's official) punch your annoying hero square on the nose. It doesn't set a good example for the kiddies. Plus story-wise, Jack's had a lot of time to get used to the idea of his immortality so he now just wants answers rather than venting his anger which probably faded after the javelin incident.

Sports car > space hopper

They'll be comparing the size of other things in a minute just to try and beat the other at one-upmanship. Anyway space hoppers are loads more fun than sports cars.

Roads? Where?

Maybe I'm not seeing the sense of scale of the conglomerate. I'm too busy getting distracted by the looks of distrust between jack and the Doctor. It's sad to see them not getting on, especially with only three episodes of Jack goodness to treat ourselves with.

"Oh I've missed this!"

It's nice to see the happy go lucky Jack back, the one who likes to throw himself into danger. Maybe it's because he's not in charge and he doesn't have to worry so much about the others like he does with his team back in Cardiff. He doesn't have to be the boss so he can let loose a bit. Maybe it's just because he's back with the Doctor again.

Shooting stuff
Jack, you may be able to get away with shooting stuff over on Torchwood (well, let's face it, shooting stuff is the mildest of what Jack and friends get up to over here, but you can't do it when there's impressionable kiddies watching. They may get bad ideas.

Passport control is a bit different in the far-flung future

I wonder if you'd be let in if you didn't have perfect teeth?

"He says he's a doctor of everything"
Nice to see he's still a bit modest. And it's the first of all those trigger words/phrases that populate this episode.

How cute was the little Blue Peter winner?

Answer = very.

Million years as clouds of gas and downloads
Just think of the logistical problems of being a download of all things. Did we get swapped around by aliens on a futuristic version of Napster? Were we bittorrented? It would be very impractical. What would happen if some packets were lost en route – you'd end up without an arm or your head or something.

Saved yer life

Lucky Jack was there. Nice to see them starting to fall into their old routine. Although Jack isn't letting saving the world get in the way of doing a bit of "Hey, how you doing?"

You are not alone

He's so enthusiastic and lovely. I'm rather liking Professor Yana. The first time I watched it he reminded me of Hartnell's Doctor. (of course the reason why is D'oh!obvious now) I wonder if that was a conscious decision or if it just happened that way? I have the feeling it was a conscious decision especially having now seen posts by three different users pointing out how Yana is loving the Doctor's life: he's a scientist with a companion, helping people blah, blah, blah.

Jack. STOP FLIRTING!"

"It's a hand. In a Jar."

Martha's decidedly unimpressed with Jack's Doctor DetectorTM. You can hardly blame her though. It's certainly not as sexy as a compass that doesn't point North. And it's *still* moving too. It brings a new meaning to the phrase hand!porn (as mentioned before) But we won't go there, after all this is a show for the kids. ;)

I do wonder though if the hand would regenerate when the Doctor next does. Be interesting to see. Especially if Jack still has it when it happens: one day the jar starts glowing, the hand bursts into a flaming light and resolves into a decidedly female hand… (because girl!Doctor is the way to go).

Didn't need the flashback, 10 million people saw the Christmas Invasion. A goodly majority of them are still watching and those new viewers will very quickly be brought up to speed by wikipedia/their family/friends.

Jack + Doctor's Coat

See, Jack has learnt something from Ianto. Ahem.

Made from food and string and staples

Yana's been watching a bit of McGuyver whilst waiting for inspiration to strike and invented something amazing out of nothing. A real genius at work. Someone at least as clever as the Doctor….hmmmmmmmm.

This is the moment it all starts to go bad

That TARDIS. She looks so innocent (and boxy) but she causes so much trouble. Is this the trigger point? And not the mentions of regeneration or being the Last of the Time LordsTM?

But enough wool-gathering, there's some plot to be had involving the worlds most rubbish radiation door:

Look at it, it's just a sliding door, there's no inner door or anything and by rights when the engines ignite everyone in that room should be nothing more than toasty little shadows on the wall.

Poor Jack

He's only been back on the TARDIS for half an hour and he's already died twice. There's jeopardy-friendly and then there's just stupid.

Yes she does know

That he'll come to live again, she just wants the excuse to give him a good snogging practice her bedside manner. Jack finds it much better than the Doctor's.

Can we come up with more excuses valid plot reasons to have those two running?

Jack, now is not the time

honestly, you'd think he had a one track mind. :p

Once upon a time there was a man named Jack

it's nice to get some back story on Jack and his fun run-ins with death:
(1) Stabbed in the heart, (2) Fall off a cliff, (3) WWI, (4) WWII, (5) Javelin, (6) Posion (possibly the Carbon Monoxide posioning in Out of Time), (7) Starvation, (8) Shot in the head by Suzie, (9) Abaddon, (10) Shot by Owen, (11) Time Vortex, (12) Electrocution (13) Radiation. That makes him the Fourteenth Jack.

Which leads on nicely to my theory. Bad Wolf!Rose wanted Jack to live but wasn't specific with what she wanted. Bad Wolf!TARDIS has the power to grant this, but what if she gave the only sort of life she is aware of: the life of a Time Lord (give or take a couple of lives). What if he isn't actually immortal, just really long-lived and the only reason his face hasn't changed each time he 'dies' is because his DNA isn't set up to do it?

Be interesting to see if the next couple of weeks holds out this theory.

Unrelatedly, I wonder if poor Martha is starting to feel a bit oppressed by Rose? After all, she was pretty much a god. And a blonde one at that. It may be a little bit creepy that Jack watched Rose growing up. I'm undecided on that.

But the idea of Jack/Jack is delectable – but possibly also Jack's idea of purgatory (see Pirates of the Caribbean 3).

Also, I'm sure that the Doctor is lying when he says that the TARDIS doesn't love him any more and ran to the end of the Universe to try and escape him.

It is interesting to learn that the Doctor would be a Vengeful God if he had the heart of the TARDIS in him. Mainly because IT'S ALREADY HAPPENED!! What happened in those few minutes while the Doctor had the Heart of the TARDIS in him. What did he do? Because I have this feeling that something did.

[Poll #1006913]

Your TARDIS is only impervious from attack if you remember to close the door after you

Maybe a certain someone will remember this in the future

Martha is rubbish at covering

When I saw the pocket watch for about a millisecond I thought the Professor was a descendant of Tim Latimer, the watch passed down through the years, then I remembered this was the year one hundred trillion and that was pretty unlikely, the watch would have rusted to dust eons ago.

Martha's look of horror when she realises what the watch could possibly mean is perfectly timed and executed and matches our own. Suddenly the brain is whirring: who could this possibly be (if you'd not been spoilt before this moment)

She is still rubbish at covering though.

Is it nearly lift off yet?

Longest countdown ever! And really the three of them should have been fried when the ship blasted off.

Finally, the Doctor is actually scary

Instead of just shouty and it's actually a little bit scary. Poor Martha, she doesn't deserve that, she's only the messenger.

It's all starting to come together

The Evil laughter, the whispers, the drums. And an oh-so-familiar voice. This is definitely not Romana :p

Why yes, I am evil

Oh Sir Jacobi. You do do evil sooooo well.

And for the first time in many years

the Doctor senses another of his own race. And he knows exactly who it is.

I feel sorry for Chantho

It's not nice when you are betrayed by the man you adore. But I think she realises he's not who he was, which is why she shoots him. She's a clever-un our Chantho. I just hope that 'the doctor' killing his companion isn't going to be paralleled by our other Time Lord and companion.

Brings a new meaning to hand!pron

How long before we get Master/Doctor's!hand fic? Or has it already been written?

Knock the latch down

This got much lols in our house.

Shiny!

But who will he turn in to? Oh come on, it's the world's worst-kept secret in recent months (yes Philip Glenister I'm looking at you)

Martha: "Hold on I know that voice" <- She's a Life on Mars fan, obviously.

"Use my Name"

Poor old Doctor, you get the feeling he's always hoped to find another of his people, somewhere in the depths of time and space. How downcast he is to discover it's possibly the one who hates him the most.

I rather like John Simm's Master. He's a bit, erm, madcap and rather Doctorish. But back in the TV Movie (which is canon) wasn't he basically dropped into the heart of the TARDIS? If so, how did he escape? Was he released to help fight in the Time War? Did he use the Chameleon Arch before the final battle which the Time Lords lost and managed to save himself from the annihilation visited on the rest of their race?

Belatedly, the Doctor realises that he should stop him

but it's too little too late and they're trapped in the future with just Martha's screams and a broken door between them and a chompy death from the Mad Max bikers from hell.

OoooooooEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooh indeed.

Next week

Some much stuff, so little time:
[x] It's the same Downing Street set/room in Cardiff Castle. I wonder if it’s still a steel box
[x] Saxon's thumbs up as he gasses his cabinet
[x] UNIT! UNIT references are always made of win
[x] The little ting! when Saxon smiles at the end. Lol.

In conclusion
Okay, the plot may have had its holes, but the characterisation was spot on. Jack and the Doctor's little conversation as Jack got irradiated was really good, lots of backstory but not too clunky.

And of course, Derek Jacobi, made of AWESOME!

I'm a bit biased when it comes to Jack, so of course I'm going to have a fondness for episodes featuring him, especially when it's not emo!Jack too. I hope he have some of newfound love of life back to Cardiff with him to Torchwood Three.

8/10

And if you've not seen it yet, go and see my spoilery for Utopia Life on Gallifrey vid.

I always tought Jack would look for Rose (the way he looked), because that is exactly what I would do if I was stuck at time and had the chance.
Actually, I ask if the Doctor didn't do the same things once in a while (of course, while he wasn't with Martha).

And about Martha and Rose...she's not being bitchy, and again, I think I would feel the same way, but the Doctor definitely didn't like very much (he never likes). And Rose was very commented in the beginning (of course! Doctor was missing her terribly) but he stoped to talk about her, because he knows he has to move on. But Rose's topic will come sometimes, as with John Smith that didn't know he was showing the Doctor's feelings or now with Jack...it was obvious Jack and the Doctor would talk about her!
The thing is that Martha will have to learn to live with it, because Rose left, but never will really be gone.
