Talk about random, and here the clever money was a break from tradition and getting a boy on the TARDIS, cos a boy (unless it's Jack, obvs) wouldn't be as likely to fall in love with the Doctor and we could get a year or two of a romance free TARDIS.

But instead we get a familiar face who is played by a woman who is pretty well reviled by the vast majority of British Fandom thanks to what she's done before and rather loved by non-British fandom who grew rather fond of her during The Christmas Invasion.

His Lordship is immensely pissed off - in fact he'll probably not be watching next year because he can't stand her. As I pointed out to him though, if she's stuck in Cardiff filming for the next nine months there won't be another series of The Catherine Tate Show for at least a year, and it's a reasonable price to pay.

At least she's got that nice antagonism towards the Doctor which hopefully means she won't fall head over heels in love with him, it'll create some tension in the Doctor-Companion dynamic (which has been sadly lacking in all the new series) and she'll call him on his shit (which Martha did do, but Rose didn't) which is what he needs. Rly.

Personally, I'm of the 'bring it on' frame of mind and when Martha comes back he'll end up so henpecked, bless him.

I wonder if it's worth a £1 of actual money to bet on all the Martha h8-ers jumping on the good ship Donna - because she's not Martha?

My thoughts are pretty much summed up in my journal but I will say that I thought the Christmas episode was very weak. I wanted a boy in the TARDIS but an older female who isn't in love with the Doctor should create something of a different dynamic too.

is it too much to ask for a hot boy to join Team TARDIS? I know it's my shallow fangirl side talking, but even so...

I am still of the mind that all this wank is totally needless. Why judge a character/actress based on one single poorly-written episode? It was a Rusty episode for christ's sake as well! And judging by Saturday's episode he does most of his writing whilst high, or listening to whatever his hubris tells him.

I am reserving my judgement 'til I have seen what the likes of Moffat et al will write for the character.

Also, personally, I hope that Donna will slap/chin teh Doc' at least once. He deserves it. She'll take his massive ego down a peg or several ;)

Steven Moffat is writing two episodes - seriously all is not lost.

Is it a bad thing that although we find domestic violence completely disgusting and evil we still want to see some visited on the Doctor? It conflicts me.

Whut? Just two? That's practically criminal! He's easily the best writer the show has. Puts RTD to shame anyway.

It isn't bad in The Doctor's case; he deserves a good beating for the way he treated Martha.

I liked her in the Christmas special, but don't know if I can cope with an entire 13 episodes...

Ah Tate hate lol

I'm looking forward to -

Martha "brain box" Jones vs Donna "Thick Town, Thickana" Noble - who will slap the doctor into submission first and dump one of them into the Time Vortex ?

I wonder what they'll do with her, but RTD obviously loved the character and she must be a joy to write.

The Doctor will be going "oh we're in the year five billion and six, it's a tangled marshy jungle out there &c &c" and she'll be going "you want me to go out there, and ruin my shoes? They're new! Take me somewhere nice yer bastard"

Probably.

I'm trying to persuade myself that it might not be that bad, but I'm really not sure I want to watch it. I cannot stand Catherine Tate (or at least I've never seen her in anything I could stand watching for more than a couple of minutes- except for the Runaway Bride, but that was Dr Who so...)

Gut reaction: Oh god no!

I'm one of those rare few who'd never seen Ms Tate in her sketch show, and went into Runaway Bride with no preconceptions, and although I realise that the character was written and performed to be rather deliberately irritating and annoying, I thought that Catherine did a superb job. So although I'm slightly miffed that the rumours about Carey Mulligan coming back weren't true (or at least, she's not a companion...), I'm pretty open-minded about the next series. I certainly don't revile her, although if I hear "am I bovvered" one more time I'll scream unless I'm the one saying it...

And yeah, I'm looking forward to the changed dynamic in the TARDIS - which is going to change yet again when it's Donna and Martha.

Are there really Martha haters out there? That's such a shame. I didn't think she was quite as good as Rose - mainly because her character didn't seem as well-defined, but that was primarily a writing thing. But I liked her, and I loved Freema's enthusiasm.

David.

Yes there are, lots of them, it makes me sad. Especially considering how completely lovely Freema is.

You're right. Did you see the Confidential the other week, the one that went with The Sound of Drums? She was talking about doing her own stunt driving, and seriously, I find it hard not to fall in love with that sort of enthusiasm. She's fabulous.

The only thing I can see about Donna that might be good is that she is likely to challenge him. He does need someone who won't take his shit and who DOESN'T think he's God's gift to the universe.

Though if Donna falls in love with the Doctor, too, I'll smash up my TV. Enough of that now plz.

Psst, it was TRB, not TCI. ;)

I'm actually looking forward to this. It'll give us a nice break from the shipping stuff of the previous seasons, plus it's a very different kind of companion, who'll be ready to call him on stuff, which as she said herself, he needs.

I think a lot of people are worried and think she'll be just like in the Christmas special, but I doubt that'll be the case. To be on full time, I'll imagine she'll be toned down, (smarted up a little?), and be less annoying. After all, Donna was quite nice in her quieter moments.

I liken it to Vala in SG1. In her first episode, or even the few she was in the next season, she was very brash and in your face. When she came back the next year for a full season, that was still there, but pulled back quite a bit.

Actually, thinking about it, all that slapping and attitude reminds me of Jackie kinda, which can only be a good thing. :)

I miss Jackie.

I shall be staying on the ship that is "hate all new who companions who aren't Jack or Rose, whilst secretly petting all the old who ones".

I can't possibly say anything about anyone else. Except that maybe another male companion might have made me change my mind about other companions.

You have an excellent point re no Catherine Tate show. This is a good thing as I'm really not very fond of her. However as an expanded character and as a companion this has a lot of potential. No falling in love - this is great, but also the chance for some of her rough edges to be sanded down a bit. Plus I'm looking forward to the whole 'how they bump back into each other' thing. Or is she just there for Christmas? I hadn't thought of that bit and still haven't read any official announcement.

And heh, what will the Martha-haters do?!
