Thursday had us on an away-evening to the ever-lovely Star City to go to see Harry Potter (well if you want to see something on the big screen you might as well watch it on a big screen that's even bigger than your house)
Because we went a day before everyone else it wasn't that busy, even less so because it was still a school night. Even so, we ended up with a bunch of chair kickers sitting behind us. You can drive a bleeding Segway down the rows - there is enough legroom for your feet so that you don't kick the back of my chair EVERY FIVE MINUTES!!!! (Sorry, bit of a CAPSLOCK!Harry moment there)
Stuff I loved:
[x] Ron is by far the best of them. This is a true fact. I was, therefore, extremely saddened by his complete underuse in the film. But at least he (mostly wasn't there to go "Bloody Hell!" and stuff)
[x] The Room of Requirement - such a gorgeous set, I liked all the mirrors with their flaking silvering, and the funny columns (and Dobby's Christmas Tree)
[x] That one bit when Remus was staring all lovingly at Sirius, because it made me chuckle so much.
[x] All the little boys watching the film going "ewwwwwww" in perfect unison when Cho and Harry kissed. (There were also some appreciative sighs from some of the girls in the audience too.
[x] Harry wasn't particularly full of CAPSLOCK!rage - which was nice - if he was I would have punched him.
[x] Umbridge was deliciously horrible. Booooo hisssssssss
[x] The Thestrals: just how I imagined them
[x] Hermione's 'teaspoon' comment to Ron
[x] The Ministry of Magic set - like a Silent Hill version of the Underground, but much cleaner. I was quite stuck by how Neville, Luna and Ginny are the B-team in an RPG (Harry, Hermione and Ron are your Cloud, Barrett and Aeris and they are your Ashe, Basch and Penelo (ooh I cross the Final Fantasy beams a bit there, didn't I?)
[x] I want some of those horrid moving kitten plates. No really.
[x] Gary Oldman - who has seemingly succumbed to the Cult of Geek Chic with his brown pinstripes.
Stuff they changed but it still worked:
[x] Cho being the one who (inadvertantly) grassed up the DA.
[x] The big fight in the Ministry. Missed the little ampitheatre room, but the magical combat looked a lot of fun and not too much like part of the dance routine from Prince Charming (if you're not old enough to get that reference, ask yer mum)
Stuff I was annoyed with:
[x] Sirius' 'death' (in commas because I'm still not really sure if he's dead or not). The veil is a grotty curtain, not some wispy bit of smoke. Did like the whole "SIRIUS NOOOOOOOOOOO" bit being played out in silence.
[x] The lack of Tonks, because she's great.
Stuff I missed and was saddened by it's cutting from the film:
[x] Firenze - because Centaurs are made of win and I would have loved to see his classroom fully realised in CGI
[x] Ron and Hermione not being Prefects
[x] Ron and his new career in Quidditch
[x] Harry letting loose his CAPSLOCK!Rage and trashing Dumbledore's office
I have to say I did rather enjoy it. I think they are now finally hitting their stride and I'm quite looking forward to the next film (less so if the rumour of them introducing new, random characters who aren't in the books is true though)
8/10
Well Done.
I am somewhat nervous about Tesco's threats to sell the Deathly Hallows early. Not that I won't get a copy but that I'll end up being inadvertantly spoilt on my way home from work if it is released early. After all scumbags in Telford do have a habit of spoiling Harry Potter books the day they come out. Ooh that takes me back. Took me ages to find that 2-year old news story too. But I reckon the Bedsheet Spoiler will be out in force when the book is finally released, after all they did get on Sky News and BBC news with their antics. They want their fame.
Reading update: Have just finished Order of the Phoenix today, so will be starting on Half Blood Prince just before I go to bed, giving me 4 days in which to read it before Friday night.
