Cloverfield! Cloverfield!!!!
February 13th, 2008 07:23 pmWent to the cinema at the weekend to see Cloverfield. Unfortunately due to lack of money we had to go the Chav Central fleapit rather than making the extra effort and going to Star City.
Trailers
Doctor Who Series 4: GIANT WASPS are very scary when they're nearly thirty foot long. Completely unimpressed. There was a cheer from a chivvy contingent when Martha appeared looking all wet and pissed off and a groan when they saw Billie. Yay for the Ood. Even if they are a bit evil. Yes, I could quite happily watch Doctor Who in a cinema every week. It does look very very good in massive.
Iron Man: I'd completely forgot that this was soon to be coming out. Not sure if I'm liking Robert Downey Jr's facial hair. The trailer seemed to have been cut in that rather depressing chronological order
Star Trek: the one that's been on the internets for a bit now.
Jumper: I think I'm going to willingly go and see a film with emo!Vader in. And after I swore not to as well. But it does look good.
The Main Feature
The Set up
I really liked the way it was constructed, the shaky camera footage (which gave me absolutely no queasy motion sickness at all) was very reminiscent of drunken videos I've taken in my time.
And it's true, everyone would be there with their cameraphones videoing what was going on, because we would want to blog about in on LiveJournal
I also really liked the fact we were concentrating on a small group of normal people, with no special skills or knowledge, who were just trying to get through the night alive.
The Monster
Was brilliant. Love the way he/she/it looked different in every single shot. And the way it shot/dropped it's evil devil spawn from the sides of its head. However, sometimes the scale of it looked wrong. Occasionally it was the size of the skyscrapers it was destroying and at other times (like the face-off in Central Park) it only looked about 30ft high rather than a couple of hundred feet. But they are really tiny niggles.
The Cast
Didn't find them particularly annoying (which isn't very often the case when I watch Monster/Horror films), but I wasn't that bothered about what happened to them. Poor Hud though. I get now why his MySpace profile got changed. :p
Expanded Universe
Surprised that none of the backstory was mentioned at all. All the ARG stuff that got released on the internets. I wouldn't have even known that Rob was going to work for Slusho if not for the stuff I'd read on
01_18_08 last year.
Scariest Bit
In the subway tunnels. I'm scared of the Underground already, thanks for making it worse. Gah.
Heart in mouth moment
When they were crossing the roof between the buildings.
Most unobservant Bit
I didn't, however, see the 'thing' dropping into the sea at Coney Island at the end of the film, even though I knew about it and knew to look out for it. Gah.
In conclusion, really enjoyed it and would like to see it again when it comes out on DVD just so I can slo-mo a lot of the half-glimpsed moments.
8/10
If you liked this then I heartily recommend The Host to you.
Meanwhile I've been watching a bit of telly too:
Planetes
Finally finished Planetes over the weekend. I really really liked it, so much so I'm going to see if I can track down the boxset after next payday. It got dismissed by my other half for being boring because it wasn't full of fighting and explosions and stuff (he caught about 10 minutes of an episode once), but I'm full of squishy love for the characters.
8/10 over all for the series
S-cry-ed
From an intriguing start it sort of degenerated into continual fighting, especially the last episode which was seriously OTT on the fighting side of things and completely ignoring all the characters for the sake of a pointless big scrap. Rubbish.
6/10 overall for the series
Primeval
I knew Cutter's ex-wife was a complete bitch. I missed bits of it on Saturday and I missed last week's too so I'm not entirely sure why she's teamed up with the sweet doctor from Green Wing to sabotage Cutter. Poor Rex. :( Oh and I loved the sticky-back plastic + hairdrying remote camera unit Connor invented.
Next week looks pretty exciting though.
