The Dark Knight
July 26th, 2008 10:35 pmJust come back from seeing The Dark Knight. Oh my word, it was a bit good.
Trailers:
Tropic Thunder: I lauged three times during the trailer so that bodes well, it's like a (less) fucked up Apocolypse Now
You Don't Mess with the Zohan: Solider to Hairdresser? Adam Sandler's hair does look love though and the foot thing raised a giggle.
The X-Files: I want to believe that it's going to be good, but I have this awful feeling that it's not. I want to believe...
The Orange Film Pitch IS STILL BLOOMIN' ROB LOWE. GET A NEW ONE ALREADY!!!
This was so much darker than Batman Begins. And had the bleakest ending to a film that I've not seen in quite a while. No one loves the Batman, he'll be getting his emo on.
[x] Gordon still looks like a badass Ned Flanders with that moustache. [As an aside are there any Why so Sirius? icons in existence?]
[x] Knew he wasn't dead, and when he got into Dent's van after a couple of seconds checking for make-up behind the goggles I guessed it was him.
[x] Heath Ledger was amazing. Amazing. After about thirty seconds I completely forgot it was him and was alternately squicked/freaked out by his performance. The twitchy lip-licking he affected only added to the effect. When I was little I used to be really scared by the Joker, but then Jack Nicholson played him and because he was so Jack Nicholson in it I lost my fear of the character. I afeared of him again now.
[x] And he so Glasgow-smiled his own face.
[x] Did anyone else spot the potato peeling along with all the knives when the Joker paid a visit to the station?
[x] The 'magic trick' was supremely icky and reminded me of that urban myth that went round our school when I was doing my GCSEs about the kid that did the exact same thing with a pencil during an exam.
[x] And he's a master of disguise too, even managing to pull off that nurses uniform with some pizazz. He did look even more freaky when disguised as a cop though, I think it was the lack of make-up
[x] I was intrigued to see how they'd carry out Dent's transformation from shining knight to monster and I was quite impressed with how it was done.
[x] Two-Face's make-up/CGI was very impressive looking and really scared the two ten year olds sat in front of me.
[x] Eric Roberts! All swaggering threat and the bit with his ankles made me do a wince of owie. (along with most of the audience).
[x] Maggie Gyllenhall was a much better Rachel, but as one of our group pointed out, she also wasn't quite the right person for the role and that she probably wanted Bruce to bend her over his desk and spank her with a paddle. Richt or wrong people for the role is a bit of a moot point now.
[x] Morgan Freeman was as awesome as always. I'm a bit sad that his (quite right) ethics are going to cause a split between him and Bruce.
And a bit of talk on Batman himself, poor chap, no one really talks about him in reviews
[x] The ridiculous pout is still there
[x] And what's going on with the gravelly Bat!Voice?
[x] He was still quite awesome though.
[x] And his Bat!gadgets are as imaginative as always. The bat!sonar is a nifty extra I want to get on my phone. Make games of hide and seek really, really easy. And a cat-protective suit? Foreshadowing mayhaps?
[x] And Bruce falling alseep during his high powered conference did make me LOL.
Lights! Camera! Explosions!
[x] Loved all the action scenes, even with the slightly confused irection meaning that if you're not paying complete attention you'll soon lose track of what was going on
[x] The car chase from the station to the jail was brilliant fun, all the explosions, the bazooka and the nifty way you can unhook parts of the Batmobile to make a bike. Nifty!
Random bits
[x] Prisoners: more morals than the 'normal' citizen.
[x] Surprise William Finchtner! (The most hard-as-nails Bank Manager I've ever seen. I bet your bank manager doesn't keep a sawn off shotgun in his desk!
[x] Surprise Cillian Murphy! Wasn't he thrown in the Asylum at the end of Batman Begins? What's he doing out and about dealing drugs? (It was a great little cameo though)
[x] Should we be worried that the Mayor of Gotham is Richard of the Never Aging? Is the Island hidden somewhere off the coast of Gotham?
All in all a very pleased 8.5/10
I really want to go and see this again.
On Tuesday I'm going to see Wall-E. Completely the other end of the spectrum, no?
