People of ElJay lend me your ears! (I promise to give them back later).

My dear, beloved Nokia N95 is 18 months old next month which means I get an upgrade (yay!)

But what do I go for? I'm not particularly enthused with Vodafone at the moment due to them scrapping pay as you go internet access and replacing it with a 50p flat rate (I browse maybe four pages a day, costs me 10p at most - hence my unimpressed-ness) so I have no brand loyalty now and will jump ship to another service provider (who will probably be just as cack, but hey ho).

I've narrowed it down to two phones:

First up, the Nokia 5800.
[+] I've owned a Nokia in one form or another for well over 13 years now.
[+] I love the predictive texting system on it
[+] I can transfer over my contacts and Nokia maps stuff with little hassle
[+] I can type on it with my nails
[+] It's small and wee and I can use Micro SD cards in it
[+] Already have a car charger for it (and spare mains chargers)
[-] According to the forums, it's a bit buggy
[-] £7.50 a month extra on Vodafone for the interwebs
[-] Loads of people complaining that it's breaking within a month or so of getting it :(

Then the young challenger, the iPhone
[+] It's an iPhone!
[+] Twitter, Facebook and LJ apps
[+] unlimited internet and wireless for the duration of the contract
[-] Can only get from O2
[-] £100 is the cheapest I can get it but then there's the contract on top of that. So not cheap
[-] iTunes and I don't think you can stick mp3s on there. Converting 16gb of songs will be highly annoying
[-] Will have to manually transfer over the contacts

Now I like the iPhone and I like the 5800 but which is better?

There's only one way to find out...

I had a play with the 5800 when I upgrading my phone and I didn't like it all that much.

Like all Apple products, the iPhone is hideously overpriced.

In the end I went with the Samsung Omina (you can see a picture of this and your two possiblities here oddly enough). It's a thing of love and beauty as far as I'm concerned. Run Windows Mobile 6.1 and is all I could want in a smartphone. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I got an iPhone last fall, and I love it. I kind of can't remember life before it anymore. But your pro/con list does seem to point in the way of the Nokia.

I know two people with iPhones, and one imported it from the US so he's had it a while and he still brags about it ;)
The other only recently got it and every 5 seconds he's showing me another app he just downloaded.

I fell out with Apple at uni and have never forgiven them (for crashing just because I walked past them) so I refuse to have anything to do with any Apple product. Hey, it's my eccentricity! I'm also a Nokia girl, but I barely use my phone so I'm never bothered about the whistles and bells (we'll ignore the camera, WAP browsing, radio and games then...) I've been with Orange for ever and I've been very happy with them, although there is the odd pocket of poor reception.

iPhones look pretty but after all the problems with iPods I am cynical and don't really trust Apple products. I think they care more about getting stylish-looking products out as quickly as possible to make lots of money, rather than testing them out properly to make sure they are reliable and don't bugger up after a few months.

Having said that, I don't really like Nokias either. I recommend Sony Ericsson phones! I love mine and it's never let me down.

I have a 5800 as a work phone (go figure why an engineer needs a music phone!) and it is the bees knees. No bugs that I have found and the battery life is top banana. It also makes my tunes sound good.
The only con I have on it is that at home it doesn't get as good a signal as my SE t700

I totally agree with [livejournal.com profile] crapguitarist about Sony Ericssons! I've always had them and love them to death. But, after saying that, I've been looking at the HTC Diamond2 vs iPhone for my new phone (because my sister is getting the Sony I wanted to upgrade to and we can't have the same phone lol).

I was dead set on the Diamond2 and then I read the article this morning about the new features that the next iPhone update will give (which, really should've been on there from day one) which is making me consider it again...

Also I've never liked Nokias. I've only ever had one (my first ever phone- the 8250 or whatever with the blue screen haha) but have played with quite a few over the years (I helped my Dad sell phones for a while).

Yeah I'm not really much help at all haha.. I would pick the iPhone over the Nokia though.

Kills me to not-suggest an Apple product but I'd stick with Nokia. Phones are essentially meant to make your life easier and more fun, and the best way to achieve this is to have something familiar, easy to operate, and with minimal amount of distracting/moneysucking ability to have add-ons.

*is practical*

I'm not really a fan of the Samsungs, I've tried them, but we just don't get on.

The other half has had Sony Ericsson's for years and I can't stand the predictive texting on them. And good predictive texting is a big factor for me.
