What series could this possibly be?

One of BBC's popular dramas almost didn't finish its recent series. Two of the actors - one blond, one dark, decided to forget their previously hetero lifestyles, wives etc, and started a passionate affair. This wasn't the problem. The problem occurred when the two lovers fell out. And refused to appear on set together. Production had to shut down. Eventually the boys showed enough intelligence to agree to see out the series, until one could be killed off.
What series could this possibly be?
