Oh here be spoilers, lots and lots of spoilers about last night's episode.
[x] Lets get the big surprise out of the way first. It took me ages to click who was playing Oswin. Well, in my defence all the 'spoilers' had said that she was being introduced at Christmas so it didn't even occur to me. Now I am massively intrigued - Will she be the same character? Will we be meeting her earlier in her timeline a la River? If that's the case why did she not recognise him? Are we going to have our first Dalek companion? Because that would be all types of awesome (but it would mean the Doctor having to visit a lot of very flat planets (because floating Dalek CGI is expensive)
[x] If she is playing the same character then the Doctor wouldn't even know because he's never seen her (human her anyway), and for once the audience would be cleverer than the Doctor.
[x] I liked the Dalek-ised opening credits logo. They're doing a different one for each episode, right? Will next week's have dinosaur bones?
[x] They've cut back on all the stupid primary colour Daleks, nice to see all the gold ones and the special weapons Daleks. And the job of the White Daleks to press buttons?
[x] Liked the Parliament scenes, especially when all the Daleks were going 'Save us!'
[x] I thought that back in the real world Amy was a children's author, or have I forgotten something (which is quite possible I still have terrible baby brain even now)
[x] Very sad that Amy and Rory were getting divorced, although I understand Amy's reasons for doing it (and how it was needed for the plot). The whole scene on the teleport made it rain in my eyes a bit, but well done to the Doctor for getting them back together (sort of).
[x] But divorce, after spending 2000 years guarding and loving her, I don't believe that Rory would be the one instigating it. (Note how Amy signed her name Williams). I can get Amy pushing her away, and Amy not having an adult discussion with him about it (because she has previous with this), but not Rory, he loves her too much, although maybe that's the point, he loves her and wants er to be happy so if letting her go will make her happy then he'll do so.
[x] The creepiest thing about the episode (other than the intensive care Daleks) were the Cylon!Daleks. Ladders and Stairs can't save you now! But it seems outside of the Dalek MO. Daleks are all EX-TER-MIN-ATE not Assimilate (that's a whole other genocidal alien race). The whole reason that Daleks want to wipe everyone else out is the pure fact that they are not Daleks so why would they convert other alien races like the Cybermen do? Even as a security system it doesn't really make sense.
[x] I expect to see many many coplay Cylon!Daleks now. Easiest costume ever, all you need is a fringe and a blue LED and you're done.
[x] Rory: Eggs? whut?
[x] And the Doctor was actually scared (nice harking back to Dalek) when the Dalek's were coming to get him (although all of them had been de-weaponised. What's the worse that could have happened? He get suckered to death? ;) It was a bit of a shame that there wasn't the time to explore more the Doctor seeing the aftermath of what he'd done to the Daleks who'd fought in the Time War.
[x] Oswin wiping the Doctor from the Daleks racial memory was a nice bit of retconning too, now the Daleks won't kill him on sight, he's not the Dalek version of the Child Catcher/Monster under the bed and it gives the Doctor a choice. The next time they meet he can choose to be the Oncoming Storm (or Predator), you never know they may end up allies.
[x] I do hope we don't see the Daleks again for a few years. Give them a proper rest.
In Conclusion:
A solid opener marred by a few inconsistencies, but I'm just happy that Doctor Who is back, it's been toooooooo long!
8/10
