External Hard Drives are more trouble than they are worth. My second one has gone now. And it looks like exactly the same thing that knackered the first one (the usb bridge/driver corrupting) - only problem is is that this one is 9 days outside it's twelve month warranty. ARGH!

I've not lost *everything* this time. I backed up eight DVDs of stuff when the last one went tits up, but I've still got probably six months of stuff that could be lost beyond repair.

I'm going to have to take it around to His Lordship's Dad tomorrow to see if he can retrieve anything from it at all.

Recommendations for any external hard drives? I'm going to put my birthday money towards a new one now.

I'm going to do the geeky thing and build my own external hard drive (it's easy peasy).

I guess you can remove the hard drive from it's gubbins and grab the data by shoving it into a PC, if they've used IDE or SATA based drives of course.

I've got the Freecom 400Gb one from PC World and that seems all fine and dandy at the moment. And it's only £85 right now cos there was £50 quid off - right bargain when you see the 250Gb one costs £89!

Happy Birthday! Only not, what with the asploding hard drive etc. But, you know, virtual cake and all that stuff. *lights candles*

The hard drive thing is alarming me: was planning to invest on one as my laptop has 'I'm going to die any minute, bitch' written all over it and was thinking it would be a nifty backup-type thing. But if I have to back up everything on disks anyway, what's the point? Feh.

*hugs*

External hard-drives are tools of the devil.

At least yours lasted longer than 2 weeks which is more than my last one did.

I now have a 400gb Freecom which according to Claire (and the very nice man at PC-World) is apparently pretty good.

I hope you can retrieve the stuff off there. I lost all my data both times mine went because in my case it was an actual disc-drive fault which corrupted all the data to the point that there was nothing left to actually retrieve.

I've got two, but one's currently on the floor in my room somewhere so I can't tell you what make it is (works fine though).

The other I use all the time is a Iomga. I'd hope to god it'd never crash, it has every AVI file I've DLed on it. LOL

Might be worth a note though that PC World are selling 400GB one for about £80. I'd be getting it myself if I had the cash right now.

I have two seagate ones, and they've never gone wrong. Plus they travel really well...

Sorry to hear that. I know all too well what it's like to lose much beloved files. I back up stuff like a maniac now but there's always something that slips through the net.
