Hello, there are spoilers for Doctor Who right in here, so don't go clicking if you don't want to be spoilt.
And how frustrating is it to find out on the BBC Entertainment News on a DAY WHERE I HAVE NO INTERNET AT WORK!! Gah!
Disclaimer: yes I am a Doctor/Rose shipper (more Ninth Doctor/Rose than Tenth Doctor/Rose - not even The Stone Rose could save that for me. I do have a lot of issues over Rose's characterisation in S2). I'm also a Doctor/Martha shipper, along with Doctor/Ace and Doctor/Romana and Doctor/Brig - I'm one of those loves-them-all shippers, me. I am certainly not a Rose h8r as some people seem to think (which I think is down to judging me by my f-list but there you go).
So, Rose is coming back. the Beeb have confirmed it here and here
The Facts:
[x] She's going to be in S4 NOT the Specials
[x] She's going to be in either one or three episodes (depending on who you ask)
[x] Graeme Harper is directing and according to DWM them's episodes he's working on are the Ood episode, the Agatha Christie episode and a single RTD-written episode (which is apparently Doctor!Lite according to other reports and overheard script dialogue at last night's filming)
The Speculation:
[x] Judging from the photos (taken by an OGer, pinched from
seti_drd's post (Yay for Graeme Harper in the first picture there - the man doesn't get enough love)
[x] Rose is incorporeal (in a First Evil stylee)/ a figment of someone's imgination given form/projection of the TARDIS/Rose from the past/random person who looks like Rose/the Eleventh Doctor.
[x] At least one of the episodes is going to be an investigation into "how many companions a (absent) Time Lord can squeeze into a TARDIS" th lots of companions joining in the fun (DigitalSpy rumours have reported CT and Lis Sladen filming together)
[x] They sky is falling! The sky is falling!!
What I hope for:
[x] A story along the lines of
doyle_sb4's comment here (the second part of it - that would actually be something I'd enjoy watching) (and because it wouldn't be Doctor-dependent!Rose I wouldn't get annoyed by her clingy character assassination)
[x] Real closure for Rose. I want her to realise/have already realised that the Doctor isn't the be-all and end-all of everything (like Donna did in the TRB and Martha did and Sarah Jane did) and move on and be Rose Tyler: Earth Defender (or whatever the spin-off was going to be called). Maybe with leet Secret Agent powers so she can teach Jack how to run TW properly. I don't want sea birds getting trapped in an oil-slick of teary mascara.
[x] Rose and Martha to finally meet and actually get on really well.
[x] Snark! Adventures! Running! A Quarry!!! (Definitely a Quarry)
What I worry about:
[x] ZOMG! there's going to be SO MUCH WANK and not even of the good kind. I can see fandom becoming a really nasty place and that makes me really sad.
[x] RTD's inability to let go of Rose, it's turning people off the show and not even the legion of Doctor/Rose fans will keep the ratings up if everyone else goes to watch Saturday Night Takeaway. I've read so many comments on LJ, on the OG and on various newsblogs from people saying they're not going to watch it any more and that also makes me sad. I'm not giving up on my show yet (not when I've been watching for 20-odd years) but I worry that this is the death knell
[x] I've joked in the past at how RTD would probably do something to ruin the show just to piss off the next showrunner. Now my inner conspiracy theorist wonders if I'm closer to the truth than I thought.
In summary:
I'm a bit ambivalent about the whole thing at the moment edging towards the downward slope. wishing the PTB would remember that the show is about the crazy alien, not the human girl-Friday and considering investing in dinghy to ride the waves of wank.
If the episodes are done well then I'll be very very pleased, but worry it's going to be terribly self-congratulatory a la S2.

Date: Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 08:27 pm (UTC)Everybody's obviously entitled to their own opinion - they can hate Rose, or hate Martha, but I don't want to feel like I have to pick one of the two. Unfortunately that's the feeling I've been getting in fandom lately - you're either a Rose shipper or a Martha shipper. I so suspect though that there are many other people who do like both as well, so I guess I'm going to focus on those posts more, and try to stay away from the wank.
That said, I'm really curious how she will come back, and how she will have changed (for I'm virtually sure she will have grown up a bit), and how her appearance will influence the other characters and their relationships. If done well this could have a lot of potential.
Oops - sorry for the overlong comment ...

Date: Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 09:09 pm (UTC)With the Tenth Doctor and Rose things changed. (well, that was going to be obvious, new teeth and all) Although it is not in doubt that he was very fond of Rose, he didn't need her like his last regeneration did and their on-screen relationship changed quite a bit, and I think a lot of that as down to bad writing, rushed writing and not enough communication between the writing staff and I think that made the Doctor/companion relationship suffer (and that made me very emo because book!Doctor/Rose and comic!Doctor/Rose were (on the whole) ace).
I want Rose to have moved on because if she's the Rose who ended up in Pete's!world then getting on for a decade will have passed for her compared to the 18 months for us. (As time runs differently on the other side of the void). I want her to be fighting the good fight, working in a TW that's actually competent and putting all the stuff she learnt whilst she as with the Doctor to good use.
Because I love Rose as a character and it broke my heart to have our last view of her crying on a beach in Norway.
I don't even think I'm making sense now, so I'm going to stop :)

Date: Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 09:55 pm (UTC)I have to be honest, though, I must take issue with one small point: [x] RTD's inability to let go of Rose
I've been saying all over the internet that the constant S3 references to Rose had to be a sign that her story wasn't over. Regardless of the 'noise' from the galleries, RTD is an incredibly good writer (yes he is) and far too disciplined to waste precious dialogue on a character who's never coming back. Unfortunately I never said this in my actual own LJ and can't yet find a link to these comments, otherwise I'd be so up myself right now.
Russell T Davies can get over Rose, because Rose in and of herself was not a particularly interesting character. She's a cipher (I mean, what happened to the gymnastic skills after the first episode?) that was brought to life by Billie Piper's performance, beyond everyone's expectations. If you want a character Davies can't get over, point your finger at Captain Jack Harkness who - let's not forget - was the one who DID get a spin-off.
I'm rambling, but I think my central point is that this has clearly been on the cards for a good while, a story development that's been planned and foreshadowed.

Date: Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 12:26 am (UTC)Adult fandom is not the be all and end all of Doctor Who.
Though i am filled with much mirth at OG's forum. The same reaction is occuring as Tate got "Oh noes it's the end of Doctor Who.... Bloody RTD".
I'm hoping that we will see a strong and confident Rose Tyler, who does not need to pine for the Doctor (but like Sarah Jane has a special place in her heart for the Doctor). That will be a stroke of genius if RTD can pull it off.
I think given time, people will calm down. At the moment it's gut reactions and vows of never watching the show again (it happened when Eccleston's departure was made public).
RTD ruined the character of Rose in series 2, he's at fault, so i have a feeling he might want to ressurrect Rose from the abyss of bad character writing.

Date: Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 03:46 pm (UTC)I stepped away from the computer for the Thanksgiving holiday and when I heard of the news, I'm really hesitant to get back to it because I fear the wank about it.

Me too! That would make me so freaking happy... to see that she's moved on and done a Sarah Jane. (Then again, I wonder if there is a Doctor in this alternative universe that she got dropped into.)

Date: Thursday, November 29th, 2007 02:47 am (UTC)That said, I was happy to hear of Rose's return.
But then, I was happy to hear of Donna's return. And Jack's. And Martha's.
Come to think of it, the last casting spoiler I was ambivalent about was...David Tennant.
(me, in 2005: "Who the hell is this guy taking over for Eccleston?")
O THE IRONY
*facepalm*

Date: Sunday, December 2nd, 2007 03:06 pm (UTC)Now I'm the same as you - Nine/Rose, maybe a little Ten/Rose but I see them as just good friends, and I hated Rose in S2.
I would love to find Rose as a tough, scarred battleaxe - think Buffy in the Cordelia makes a wish episode. I would love her to just appear with something like "I made my choice a long time ago and I'm never going to leave you because I'm your friend and I enjoy this life, I enjoy the travel, I enjoy the danger, and life back on earth, any earth, just can't cut it for me."
But I know deep down inside she'll be the damsel in distress, Martha won't get a look in and Donna will be completely forgotten. I'd love to see Ten and Martha getting it together with Rose's approval, I think that would be great. But alas, we all know it won't happen.
