The news is all over my flist, the Press Release can be found here.

[Poll #1191098]

Meself, I'm cautiously pleased about the appointment. He does have the love and the best interests at heart for the show, which is what it needs in the way of a showrunner, plus he's written my favourite episodes of each series since new!Who started, he's created some iconic monsters (in Jamie and the Weeping Angels).

And he's the man who wrote my favourite TV Series of my formative years - Press Gang - I come already programmed with love for the Moff. (and I helpfully ignore him when he puts his foot in it)

I really hope that we'll get scarier episodes, more black comedy and brilliant roles for supporting cast. I think what we'll see on screen for the next couple of weeks with Moffat's two parter will give us a good idea of what to expect. I also hope that the Moff won't feel the need to write over half the episodes and bring in new blood to breathe new life into the series.

But I do worry that all the hopes I have for the newnew!Who won't come to be.

Do you think that he'll only be referred to as "Hugo Award winning writer Steven Moffat" from now on?

Dexter Fletcher for the Eleventh Doctor - hell yes!

If he's showrunner and only writes two or three eps per season, I'll be happy. I do think the role of chief writer (if there must be a chief writer) should be separate from that of Exec Producer, because they're both big enough jobs on their own, without combining them. I desperately want someone to give us consistent character arcs for the Doctor and Companion(s) across the entire season, not the vacilations of S3 (S4 does seem to have been better so far in that respect). Because I watch it for the characters, not the shiny FX. I've liked all of his episodes so far, so I'm neutral tending towards vaguely hopeful. So long as he doesn't indulge his sexism, I'll be happy...

What do you mean by that? (I'm not disagreeing, I think there's a lot about New Who that could be seen as sexist, but I'd like to know what struck you about Moffat)

I read an interview from a couple of years ago where he was basically saying that all women are interested in is marriage, and he was bemoaning the hardship of being a middle-class white male.

But on screen (bearing in mind I've only ever seen his New Who episodes since I don't own a TV), he's kept that in check. So long as he does that once he's in charge of DW, I'll be happy (since I've resolved not to read any more interviews with him).

Ahhh, haven't read that interview, seems a strange thing to say in this day and age (or perhaps not, more's the pity)

People have suggested that either he wasn't serious, or that the interviewer twisted his words. I don't know - but as I said, I've resolved to ignore interviews and just judge him on what he puts on the screen.

I do too. I know a lot of people are mourning the possible loss of continuing story arcs, but that isn't the most important aspect of the new series for me. Good characters, good plots, good entertainment each week, with some continuity thrown in now and again to keep things tied together. That's what I want.

I, too, am cautiously optimistic. IMO he's written the best episodes of New Who so far - so I have much hope. As long as he doesn't get too bogged down in the day to day things and can keep up with creative ends...I think (Hope!) it will turn out nicely.

I'm always obnoxiously hopeful though - even when there's not much reason to be.

I hope for the best, but plan for the worst. I like 2/3 of Moff's episodes, which is good, but what I know of him as a person I find worrying, to say the least. I don't think he's going to be any less of a scary control freak than Rusty, but I hope we'll at least see the end of Rose...

I'm very pleased. I refuse to be worried before the man actually does the job.

I second your nomination for eleven. It's begging for crack!fic to be written with Julia Sawalha as companion though. *laughs*

Yes, I'd like to see him as showrunner in 5 years time.

Bring it on!

Only need to worry about the quality of the scripts when the actual episodes are in front of you.

Ideally DW would be written by a team of monkeys on crack, but failing that Teh Moff will do.

I'm willing to enjoy what he does and say sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof when it comes to any potential screw ups. I, too, might have preferred Cornell, but there you go. And I admit to having a totally irrational love for Coupling, which has made me laugh so much at times that I've fallen off my chair.

I just hope this doesn't mean getting rid of all the lighthearted episodes.
