because they can't be bothered to let you know you have to go and look it up yourself:

14th August 2008: The end of Basic Accounts as we know them. (original post about what they were planning to do with basic accounts)

Changes planned to the Suspend journal punishment

Forced changes to your profile - Due September (I think you can look at it and see how it affects your journal by going through modify journal or something. I can't remember off hand)

And then from this post
- search for users by their email addresses (you may want to be setting up LJ-only gmail accounts then)
- a LJ-toys like feature which will allow you to track who is reading your journal
- ability to search your journal (but only if you're a paid/permanent/early adopter account)

Have they said which proposal they are going to go for for basic accounts?

Nope, but it will be ad-filled, that much was obvious from the start. They'll go with the proposal that makes the most money.

Thanks for posting about this. This is a paid account and my other LJ account isn't basic either (doesn't really matter for that one anyway). I also have seperate email accounts for stuff like this anyway. I consider it good practise. But still, that's handing out too much information. BUT I do like the idea of being able to search my own journal. I'm rubbish at tagging stuff (and would end up with lots of one-off tags) so this will be useful to me. Darn you LJ.

I like the idea of being able to search your own journal very much (the first two or so years of my journal was untagged!) but searching for people by emails = wtf. That's really no good for people like me who don't want "RL" people reading my journal. :-/ The tracker feels a bit intrusive too, somehow. :-/

What's the link to the "Forced changes to your profile"?

(worried Basic account holder)

And while there might be some idle (or less so) rationale for knowing who's reading you, searching people by email address is distinctly wtf-making. Would this search return folks who choose to make their email addies invisible to the casual reader of their profile?

Sigh. I'm going to have to put lj-herald on my watch-list, in the interests of knowing what might be going on. Even though I've barely any slots left with which to do so.

Paradoxically, a paid account is looking both more and less attractive all the time.

Basically it just changes the order and format of the profile page (only on mine it left me with 4 inches of what space at the top so I don't think the coding is quite there yet.)

I found the link so you can have a look for yourself and see how it affects your page
