Thanks to the wonders of the BBC iPlayer I'm watching Merlin and making a few scattered notes as I watch.
next week:
OMG Will Mellor!
Aww, they thanked Rusty in the credits. That's actually quite sweet.
In conclusion.
I rather enjoyed it. But it's got a dragon in it. Of course I would. It's straddling the line of silly, but mostly staying on the right side of said line.
A nice diversion: 7/10
I was talking to a friend today about how if Merlin was in Heroes or X-Men he'd just be considered another normal lad who by quirk of DNA has evolved beyond homo sapiens but stick him in a historial setting and he becomes the greatest magician of all time. (If he was in Torchwood Jack would just want to flirt with him, much to Ianto's annoyance, after all they've got apocalypses (apocalypsii?) to advert.) Discuss.
It's only telekinesis after all.
Ha, only.
And now I'm going to watch Lost in Austen.
- I have decided that Merlin, occupies the same far-future world as Robin Hood does, at least this way the historial quirks are less worrisome.
- The titles gave me scary Bonekickers flashbacks.
- Anthony Head can be my king any day. Even if he's magicaphobic. And doesn't he look good in a crown?
- I think I've been watching too much Torchwood. I can recognise Eve Myles even in old!man Doctor's make-up.
- In my head Richard Wilson went I don't beeeeeleeeeeve it! when Merlin saved him. I make my own fun.
- How lucky that Lady Helen and the old woman looked so alike :p
- Teen!Arthur is rather a cock. I hope his temperment improves during the course of the episode
- Eve Myles: very pretty in period dress. I'm a big fan of that purple dress.
- They should bring back the stocks. They'd look really nice in my town centre. Nothing like a bit of public humilation.
- "I'm Lady Morgana's mate..." definitely the same far-flug world as Robin Hood. I'm keeping an eye out for hoodies.
- I'm quite taken with young Merlin (no, not in that way, he's like half my age!) as a character he's rather likeable, not too dim, quite fun. Yes, I'm rather taken by him.
- Ooh, there's nothing like a bit of mace!fighting.
- Oh Merlin, don't use yer magic. Only bad can come of it.
- Surely the wound-cleaning scene has been put in purely for the rapidly converting fangirls :D Well it is the easiest way for a show to start to gather the screaming hordes.
- Yay dragon! It's the quickest way to get my support in a show. the CGI was a little bit off, but he is really well animated and he's John Hurt, you can't get much better than that. (That's even better than Sean Connery. TRUFAX.)
- Doesn't the boy ever knock?
- "Who'd want to marry Arthur?" LOLGuinevere.
- Is she singing in Welsh? I'm sure I recognised a couple of words there. It's all very pretty.
- Those cobwebs are pastede on yay!
- It would have been more heroic for Merlin to have jumped in front of the knife. That's what would have happened had it been Robin Hood. (Apart from that time where it didn't.)

And I do believe the singing was actually Katherine Jenkins so Welsh seems to fit.

And Eva Myles looked REALLLLLY pretty there.
And haha I hope Morgana doesn't go all evil.
Gwen's a loser. I don't like her. She's all.. mousy. But I guess she always was. But Arthur's such a badass. I can't see him with her.
AND MERLIN LUSTING ON MORGANA IS JUST GROSS! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE AN OLD MAN >:O

I KNOW! It's now drawn me to the conclusion that maybe Gandalf was young once too and my poor brain imploded!

Date: Thursday, September 25th, 2008 03:54 pm (UTC)As for Merlin, I'm going to give it a couple more weeks. It's a lot like Primeval and Robin Hood in that it's bubblegum for the brain (which isn't always a bad thing).

Date: Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 08:44 pm (UTC)I like Merlin, it had a few duff moments. The Dragon was a bit naff.
Though it's a lot better than Robin Hood, mainly because Merlin is likeable where as Robin is a bit of a twit really.
Oh and even better news - Michelle Ryan is in episode 3 as the evil sorcess (sp?) Nimueh. She's apparently the big bad of the series. And nice to look at *whistles*

If it was then it failed cos the (presumably straight) male director failed to show enough naked!chest.
LiA FTW!

Date: Thursday, September 25th, 2008 09:43 am (UTC)Me and Dave heard "maid". But having not watched it with subtitles I can't be certain (and even then they should give me the subtitles job because I can do it better than they can sometimes).
Dave turned to me and said "is that for lending them Gwen?"
Between that and all the times he points out slashiness in some of my favourite tv shows I think he's been spending too much time watching them with me.
I wouldn't say that this is better than Robin Hood. Might get that way in the future, but it's not there yet. Okay I'm biased because of my little Muchly, but hey they haven't had the magic sword that heats to c.600C in a campfire of about 200C and then holds its heat the whole time Robin waves it in front of Guy's face! I think that's my way of saying that I would forgive RH about anything, but not this, not yet. Is it time for Torchwood and Robin Hood yet?
